Description:
Popov's bold Symphony No. 1 is popular with some fans. Symphony No. 3 is his first appearance on CD. In his early years, Popov was influenced by Schoenberg and the New Viennese School, but like Shostakovich, he was the target of criticism by the Soviet authorities, so he later turned his attention to music with a clear form and a nationalistic character. His Symphony No. 3 is boldly titled "Heroic," a title that makes one think of Beethoven, but it is a sturdy music with a sing-song quality reminiscent of Russian folk songs and rich, romantic harmony. It contains all the various essences of modern Russian music, such as Shostakovich's novel harmonies and aggressiveness, but also sweet and melting lyricism until it reminds one of Glazunov and Tchaikovsky. The symphonic aria for solo cello and strings is a melody sung by the cello over a somber string ensemble reminiscent of a Russian winter, and gives one goosebumps. This is Russian wandering and lamenting.Crying! [Comments courtesy of Tobu Land System]----.
