Description:
Neo-soul musician Jamila Woods completes her new album. Water Made Us, her third album, co executive produced with McCraney and released four years after her acclaimed last album. Chicago musician and poet Jamila Woods will release her first new album, Water Made Us, on Jagjaguwar, since her acclaimed 2019 album LEGACY! The album is co-executive produced by Mcclenney and Jamila Woods and features Saba, duendita, and Peter CottonTale. The album's title is a subtle reference to the famous Toni Morrison quote, "All water has a perfect memory and is constantly trying to get back to where it was )" is casually quoted. Here, memory, place, and the sentiment of return serve as pillars; in 2017's HEAVN, she finds herself celebrating her community within the genealogy of Black feminist movement organizing. While 2019's LEGACY!LEGACY! reframed his own life experiences through the telling personas of iconic black and brown artists, Water Made Us was crafted into a self-revelatory work in a whole new way. The album's story began to take shape after connecting with L.A.-based producer McClenney, and the two collaborated to create each song from scratch. The resulting album, Water Made Us, reveals a new side of Woods that was not shared on the previous album, making it her most personal album to date. Water Made Us feels like the most personal and vulnerable work I've ever made," said Woods. I like to create from the material. To dive deep into the subject matter and extrapolate from what I discover. We stayed home for two years and I became my own material. Thanks to my therapist, my astrologer, my family and friends who listened to me and helped me process and transform the thoughts and questions in my journal into this piece. Whatever stage your heart is at, I hope this piece feels like a playlist to support you through the life cycle of your relationships," Jamila says of the album.
