Description:
Nissonen & Tapiola Sinfonietta's second Ries concert is already here! Ferdinand Ries, "Beethoven's disciple," has been attracting attention since the 2020s. The Tapiola Sinfonietta, known as a high-performance chamber orchestra, has begun recording the complete symphonies on the ONDINE label. The Nissonen disc focuses on the explosive energy and colorful aspects of the music, making for a very exciting performance. Continuing from the previous release, Sayaka Kinoshiro takes the lead on second violin. The numbering of Ries's works often differs from the order in which they were composed, with the No. 4 recorded here dating from 1818 and the No. 5 from 1813, the latter being the second symphony. At the time, Ries had moved to London after meeting Johann Peter Zalomon, who produced Haydn's London Symphony, and No. 5 was his debut to the London musical world. In the first movement, motifs reminiscent of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, such as the "Fate Motive," appear frequently, as if to declare that it is Beethoven's successor. The "Fate Motive" appears here and there. In No. 4, too, you can hear the motifs of Beethoven's symphonies echoing here and there. The highlight of the piece is that these motifs, along with Ries' own motifs, are woven into a gale-like expression that makes extensive use of bold modulations and rhythmic changes that are characteristic of his works. The domestic edition comes with a Japanese-language commentary by Hiro Ichiba. Naxos Japan
